The Federation acts as an umbrella organisation for the wide range of individual Children's Book Groups around the UK. These organise a variety of book-related activities for children, often in partnership with local schools and libraries, bringing authors and illustrators to meetings and storytelling sessions. Established for more than 40 years, the Federation produces a regular newsletter and numerous specialist booklists. It organises National Share-a-Story Month each May, an annual conference and it also coordinates the Red House Children's Book Award.
