Story performance and interactive exhibition

• Age range: KS1 (year 2 primary plus KS2 for storytelling practice)
• Timetable: one hour performance for up to 250 students then each class visits the interactive exhibition for at least one hour
• Exhibition space: a room or hall of at least 100 square metres

Cost:

For one day including performance, exhibition and teaching resources

State schools, grant-subsidised price: £400
(£1.60 per student with an audience of 250)

Private schools or commercial bookings: £600
(£2.40 per student with an audience of 250)

The storyday starts with a one hour performance of five participative stories from around the world, all suitable for KS1, with opportunities to sing, copy, move, add dialogue or invent ideas. These stories are also good for older children to learn and practise telling themselves:

• The Monkeys and the Hatmaker - India
• Sweet Trouble - Africa
• The Girl and the Wolf - African American
• Snip Snip - European/Jewish
• The Shepherds Dream - Irish

After the performance we set up in a hall or resource room an interactive exhibition of five ‘story areas’. These allow children to retell and replay the five stories with costumes, toys, props and various images. Groups of about 6 spend 10 minutes in each of the areas supported by an adult, or older children from the school, who assist in retelling and organising their story play.

The storyday comes with a set of learning resources to help teachers plan their work around the storyday. Versions of these stories can be found in two books/CDs by Hugh Lupton which schools can purchase in advance:
