the story school
"Story is relevant for all children whether in schools where they start out with little language or in schools that feed pupils on to Eton. Stories feed our souls. Life is enriched. Stories bring joy and add to our life experiences."
Sue Mortimer, head teacher, Rose Hill Primary School, Oxford
the storytelling school
We believe that growing up in a story-rich environment helps children to fulfill their potential. Since 2005 we have been working with primary schools to develop the idea of a 'story school' in which children learn through story. The first step has been to create 'storytelling schools' in which teachers and children regularly tell stories from memory as a way of developing spoken and written language, building confidence and enthusiasm, and introducing topic work. Evaluations are very positive.
resources and ideas
We are not alone in believing that stories work well in the classroom. In 2009 the Rose Review stressed the importance of oral storytelling and children's literature for children's intellectual and emotional
development, and enjoyment. Many teachers are great storytellers - and many great storytellers were once teachers.
In this section you will find learning resources that we have developed with our partner schools, and links to other initiatives such as Talk for Writing and Talk for Reading which also use storytelling to capture children's imaginations.
what happens next?
Both sections will continue to grow and we would welcome your feedback and suggestions. Our next challenge is to explore with teachers and children how best to link this love of stories with other areas of learning and enjoyment, particularly reading.
teacher comment
"We looked at the children's writing today and the best example of good quality writing came through storytelling! It was amazing to see how much the children wrote and how inspired they were from teachers/you telling them stories and that was very inspirational to me.
I am convinced this is good evidence that we are on the right path and we have finally hooked into what makes our children excited"
Deputy head of one of our partner schools.
