evaluation

In 2008, with funding from Arts Council England South East, we set out to research existing initiatives for engaging children with books and stories, and discover what was known about what does and doesn't work.

what does and doesn't work?

We found a great many projects that ranged from one-off events to long-term programmes. Ongoing projects are listed in our organisations and projects directory.

Some had the funding to be systematically evaluated but most did not. We also discovered a range of different evaluation methods for measuring the impacts and outcomes of a project or activity.

It was difficult to draw any conclusions because comparatively few organisations publish their evaluation results, particularly the negative ones. We would welcome opportunities to exchange results, good and bad. You can download evaluations of our schools initiatives and larger public events.

literacy research

The National Literacy Trust has developed a framework to compare the outcomes of its range of projects for different audiences. This will be available for reference for other organisations in the sector. More info.
