our building

“Children’s story has many travelling preachers. It needs a cathedral.”

David Fickling, children’s publisher

A permanent Story Museum will be:

  • a powerful symbol of the importance of children’s story
  • an amazing experience, with an impact that tours can't achieve
  • accessible and open to everyone
  • a base for our research, networking and outreach
  • more financially sustainable.
Rochester House site plan

Rochester House

In November 2009 we received an anonymous donation of £2.5 million which allowed us to buy a 130-year lease on Rochester House in Oxford city centre.

The layout of the building perfectly suits our needs, giving us room for galleries, a performance space, education rooms, artists’ studio, play area, shop, café and offices.

More information on our new building and its history.

a doorway into somewhere magical ...

"It was the lock of the door which had been closed ten years and she put her hand in her pocket, drew out the key and found it fitted the keyhole. It took two hands to do it, but it did turn.

And then she took a long breath ... She was standing inside the secret garden."

From The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
