Binsey venues

11am - 5pm Binsey Church
Visit the famous treacle well in the churchyard. The Church of St Margaret at Binsey is associated with the life of Oxford’s patron saint St Frideswide. The churchyard contains the healing well dedicated to St Margaret. The Rev. T. J. Prout built the present wellhead in 1874. Lewis Carroll refers to this well in Alice in Wonderland, as the ‘treacle well’. There are regular Well Blessing services.
The graveyard contains a number of Prickett Family graves. One member of the family, Mary Prickett, was the governess of Dean Liddell’s daughter Alice, for whom Lewis Carroll wrote his books. FREE ENTRY.
3.30 - 4.15 pm Alice's Day service. Special service celebrating the church's connection to Alice and Lewis Carroll.
The Perch Inn
Spot the Alice memorabilia in the Wonderland garden.
Why not walk along from the Perch to Binsey?
Pre event Friday July 8
8pm River pilgrimage walk
Why not join local historian and guide Mark Davies at The Perch, Binsey, for an optional one-hour there-and-back continuation to the 'Treacle Well'. This is an extension of Mark's Waterside Pilgrimage Walk: 'first the Perch and then the Church' which follows the route of the famous rowing trip to Godstow of 4 July 1862 and expands on the information from his book, Alice in Waterland (which traces the all-important role of the River Thames in the creation of the two 'Alice' books). This Walk leaves 6.00pm from Alice's Shop, ending at The Perch before the optional extended walk starts.
Both walks are FREE. Limited to 20/24 people. Pre-booking is recommended, at towpathpress@btopenworld.com
