Alice in Wonderland panel discussion

On Tuesday 6th July at 7pm, we will be hosting an Alice Panel Discussion. Tickets: £2

A variety of speakers, each with a different perspective on Alice and her Wonderland, will offer their views and interpretations on the world and characters depicted in Lewis Carroll’s masterpiece.

Our speakers:

Tyler Shores is a contributor to ‘Alice in Wonderland and Philosophy’, an accessible and entertaining volume which delves into Alice and her wonderland and analyses the philosophy behind the tale and its characters. Tyler’s chapter in the volume is entitled ‘Memory and Muchness’: Alice and the Philosophy of Memory”

Tigz Rice is a freelance photographer and illustrator from London, who specialises in photo-manipulation. Her book – and art exhibition – ‘Wonderland’ - is the story of a young girl Alice whose life is turned upside down by a powerful cocaine addiction. Based on the original stories by Lewis Carroll, ‘Wonderland’ follows the true story of a cocaine addict and her journey through pain and loneliness, where she discovers her chosen lifestyle is not as glamorous as it may seem.

Mark Davies is the author of ‘Alice in Waterland: Lewis Carroll and the River Thames in Oxford’ which places the River Thames at the heart of Lewis Carroll’s two Alice books. It was on the river bank on 4th July 1862 that Wonderland had its birth and it was from particular incidents on or near the Thames that Carroll drew inspiration for of the best-known episodes. ‘Alice in Waterland’ sheds new light on the real places which stimulated Carroll’s imagination and on the real individuals who inspired such characters as the Hatter, the Sheep, and the Red Queen.

Keith Sheppard has written ‘Wonderland Revisited and the Games Alice Played There’ which picks up the pen where Lewis Carroll put it down. Brimming with wordplay, nonsense verse, and a cast of eccentric characters each with their own peculiar logic, this adventure is faithful to the style of the originals, picking up the pen where Lewis Carroll put it down. Be swept away on a torrent of humour and madness. Alice is back!

Esther Browning from the Story Museum will chair this discussion.

Tickets cost £2 and can be obtained by telephoning or visiting the Customer Service Department, Second Floor, Blackwell Bookshop, Oxford. 01865 333623.
