teachers' conference
raising standards in writing through storytelling: the storytelling schools model
for primary teachers, head teachers, literacy/story coordinators and SENCOs
Oxford, 14 February 2011
Storytelling can transform children’s language and enjoyment, teacher morale and community links, which is why some pioneering primary schools now put stories at the heart of their teaching. Our first-ever teachers’ conference, held on February 14 2011, showcased successful partnerships between Talk for Writing expert, Pie Corbett, The Story Museum and ‘storytelling schools’ in Oxfordshire and beyond.
The sell-out conference attracted high praise from the 100-plus teachers and head teachers who attended and were inspired by “the contagious buzz for storytelling”. Here are just some of their comments:
“The whole day was brilliant and so helpful and inspiring”
“The workshops were extremely inspirational and motivating as an approach”
“Huge fun – lots of insights into how broad the benefits of skilful storytelling can be”
“Totally useful, real and practical. Time used brilliantly. Passion, attention to detail, fun, inspirational..”
“Inspiration and ideas! Lots of laughter.”
“Knowing how to move children on in their writing in a way that will ACTUALLY work!”
“Pie Corbett is the kind of person who reminds you of all the reasons you started teaching and why it is such a fantastic and rewarding job.”
