story playgrounds
Wouldn’t it be fun for children to play story hopscotch in their break times?
Hopping through a story from one happening to the next is a great way to learn a story and retell it.
We have created stencils for playgrounds to put seven stories into the heart of children’s outside play, encouraging spontaneous story activity. This is currently a pilot project which we would love to expand more widely.
The stories we offer are:

- Snow White
- Hansel and Gretel
- Cinderella
- Jack and the Beanstalk
- Little Red Riding Hood
- The Three Little Pigs
- Goldilocks and the three bears

how does it work?
Story hopscotch allows children to practise stepping through a story. It's a giant story map on which children can hop from image to image.
Stepping helps children learn and retell stories by physically moving through its main events using props and sounds.
A sequence of simple pictures, or 'story map' helps children remember these events.
Story hopscotch was devised by Chris Smith and designed by Val Norman, both of the Story Museum, based on Ben Haggarty's story-stepping technique.
