A picture book presenting a mindboggling adventure through meticulously detailed illustrations.

Story

Journey with Anno as he takes a remarkable tour through Europe. See what you can spot as you turn each page – will it be a favourite fairy tale character or a famous French painting? Maybe you will see someone you recognise from Sesame Street? Enjoy the visual tricks and puzzles during this mindboggling adventure.

Why we chose it

A wordless picture book with every page full of meticulous detail and individual stories that come together to create an engrossing journey where past and present, fiction and fairy tale mingle on the page.

Where it came from

In 1975, Anno travelled around Europe, exploring and observing, and he recorded what he saw in paintings which became the book Anno’s Journey. Included in the book are details of items that fascinated him from music and stories, to paintings and puzzles. In Anno’s words, ‘It is a beautiful world.’

Where it went next

Anno continued his journeys through other countries and locations including Italy, America, Great Britain - and a flea market! He also used his talents to challenge readers through looking at the medieval world, fables and maths puzzles. A collection of his artworks are housed in Tsuwano at the Mitsumasa Anno Museum.

Associated stories

Other Anno books include Anno’s Italy (1979); Anno’s Britain (1982); Anno’s Flea Market (1984); Anno’s Aesop: A Book of Fables (1989)
