The story of a classic journey that still inspires travellers today.

Story

When bored, rich gentleman Phileas Fogg hears that a new railway in India has made it possible to travel around the world in just 80 days, he risks half his fortune on a bet that he can do just that. But when Fogg and his trusty servant Passepartout reach India, they realize the railway isn’t finished yet. With an officer from Scotland Yard chasing Fogg for a crime he didn’t commit, his fortune on the line, and a world filled with dusty deserts and fearsome jungles ahead of him, Fogg may have bitten off more than he can chew…

Why we chose it

A classic adventure story that still inspires travellers – and armchair travellers – today.

Where it came from

Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French poet, playwright, and novelist who wrote fantastical stories about what he imagined might be possible in the future. Even though he was alive long before any of them were invented, Verne dreamed of men on the moon, great skyscrapers that grazed the sky, and even the internet!

Where it went next

Ever since Jules Verne’s book was published, explorers have been setting out to follow in Fogg’s footsteps and make their own journeys around the world. Most recently, British cyclist Mark Beaumont set the world record for cycling around the world by bike in just 78 days.

The book has been made into a film dozens of times including a 2004 film Around the World in 80 Days’ starring Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan.

Associated stories

Some of Verne’s best known stories include Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864) and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1870).
