The story of a goose born without feathers and how she finds her place in the world.
Story
Borka is no ordinary Goose. Born without feathers Borka’s mother calls in the doctor who suggests that Mrs Plumpster knits a jersey. Unfortunately, Borka cannot swim in it as the wool soaks up water. The other goslings laugh at Borka and her lack of feathers.
When winter comes, Borka’s family and all the neighbouring Geese migrate and Borka is left cold and stranded. Finding refuge in a trawler Borka travels with the crew until the Captain takes her to somewhere he thinks she will be welcomed.
Why we chose it
One of John Burningham’s most popular stories it was elected one of the nation’s favourites in 2005. It is moving without being sentimental. The Story Museum held a special event for John Burningham’s 80th birthday (2016), which he attended and talked with fans both young and not so young.
Where it came from
John Burningham (1936-2019) studied illustration and graphic design at the Central School of Art (1959). He designed many iconic posters for London Transport before publishing Borka, which won the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration.
Where it went next
Borka was a double first. The first children’s book John Burningham created and the first children’s picture book Cape published. Following Borka, Burningham produced 30 more picture books.
Associated stories
Borka: the Goose with No Feathers was honoured with a special 40th anniversary addition (Cape). For its 50th anniversary, an opera for 3-7-year olds was produced and performed by English Touring Opera in schools and Kew Gardens
