A long running musical following the life of Tevye and his five daughters.

Story

Set in Imperial Russia in 1905, the story centres around father of five Tevye as he tries to uphold his Jewish traditions against the actions of his daughters, society and the Tsar.

Why we chose it

Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway in 1964 and was the first musical ever to surpass 3000 performances.

Where it came from

The story is based on Sholem Aleichem’s series of stories Tevye and his Daughters written in Yiddish (1894-1914). Aleichem wrote a dramatic adaptation of the stories in Yiddish which was first performed in 1919 and was adapted through the first half of the 20th Century. Fiddler on the Roof attempted to find a cultural middle ground between its strongly Jewish roots and the desires of modern audiences. It has received criticism from both sides, despite being very well received in general.

Where it went next

Fiddler on the Roof premiered on Broadway and moved to West End. It has been revived 5 times in America and 3 times in the UK (the latest closing in November 2019), in addition to numerous local and amateur productions. It received the Tony for Best Musical in 1965. It was adapted into Hebrew in the 1960s and Yiddish in 1965 and ran in Hebrew in Tel Aviv for 10 years from 2008. A film adaptation was the highest grossing film of 1981.

Associated stories

A 1939 film version in Yiddish, Tevye, became the first non-English language movie to be preserved by the National Film Registry. Fiddler on the Roof has been heavily referred to in popular culture including Gilmore Girls, Spamalot (on Broadway) and Family Guy. In 2019 a documentary, Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles was released including interviews with all 3 creators.
