A comic strip with an environmental theme that first appeared in the girls comic Jinty.

Story

The polar caps are melting and the Earth is getting hotter. All over the world storms are breaking out and the rain never seems to stop. The coasts are being swallowed by the sea and dams are at breaking point. The lowlands are swept away and the highlands are filled with people trying to escape. Fran is separated from her family and her best friend, Jill.

She sets out on a perilous journey to Scotland to find her sister, June. Along the way she is joined by a young girl called Sarah and her pet Rabbit, Fluffy. Together they search for the higher lands and their families.

Why we chose it

Jinty was one of the most popular girls comics in the 1970s and 80s with wide ranging stories, mostly science fiction and fantasy. The environmental themes and concerns in Fran’s story are even more relevant today than they were when the story was first created.

Where it came from

This comic strip appeared in a weekly comic called Jinty. It was aimed at girls and concentrated on science fiction and fantasy stories. Jinty covered a huge range of subject matter in its stories including environmental issues.

Where it went next

In 1981 Jinty merged with another girl’s weekly comic and became Tammy.

In 2019 Rebellion Publishing released a remastered version of the comic strip in book form.

Associated stories

There are many other comic strips from Jinty that focus on environmental crisis including, Jassy's Wand of Power, The Goose Girl, The Green People, The Big Cat, Friends of the Forest and The Birds
