Max has a mystery to solve - an adventure games for older teenagers.

Story

Join teenager Max Caulfield, a photography student in the American town of Arcadia Bay, as she discovers that she can rewind time after saving the life of her childhood best friend, Chloe Price. Over five distinct narrative episodes, in which player choice has meaningful and sometimes cataclysmic impact on characters, learn to navigate Max’s new ability while investigating the disappearance of her fellow student, Rachel Amber.

Why we chose it

Socially aware and complete with multiple endings based on player choice, Life is Strange provides a richly detailed portrait of teenage life that is not afraid to engage with sensitive subjects. The game is visually unique, its developers inspired by independent film festivals, and its combination of shocking plot twists and small-town nostalgia leaves a lasting impression.

Where it came from

Following the studio’s first dystopian game in 2013, Remember Me, independent French developers DONTNOD changed direction to work on WHAT IF?, later renamed Life is Strange. After many publishers asked to change Max’s gender to male, DONTNOD signed with Square Enix, a company that released the game in 2015 with minimal changes.

Where it went next

Life is Strange went on to win over 75 industry awards, including a BAFTA for Best Story (Games category), the Peabody Award for Digital Storytelling and a Golden Joystick Award for Performance of the Year. A sequel featuring a new cast of characters, Life is Strange 2, was released in 2018.

Associated stories

Along with Life is Strange 2, in 2018 DONTNOD released The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, a free-to-play standalone adventure set in the Life is Strange universe. Other games from the studio include Vampyr (2018), Twin Mirror (2020) and Tell Me Why (2020).
