A well-known nursery rhyme with actions intended to get children moving around and joining in.

Story

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear is a nursery rhyme and song with actions and movements. It is often incorporated into a skipping rope game

Why we chose it

A well-known rhyme, which many will remember as a playground skipping game, Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear was included in our original audio collection and featured in the nursery rhyme room in our Time for Bed exhibition. The teddy bear appears on Helen Cooper’s nursery rhyme mural, which can now be seen in Small Worlds.

Where it came from

As with many nursery rhymes, there is little evidence of its origins, although it has been attributed to the fictional Mother Goose. A version from 1912 is about a ladybird, and another from around the same time features a butterfly. Different versions feature different animals and actions but all are intended to get the children moving around and joining in.

Where it went next

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear is in many collections of nursery rhymes and has been recorded a number of times. A popular version is by well-known children’s entertainers The Wiggles, who performed it as part of their television show in 2016.

Associated stories

Along with the many collections in which it is included, it has also been published as a picture book in its own right, including one by Nicholas Ian and Misa Suburi (Cantata, 2017), and a sing-and-sign version by Annie Kubler (Child’s Play 2004).
