Fred does not want to go to bed. A vibrant, colourful picture book.

Story

It’s Fred’s bedtime! But will he go to bed? Not while there’s hiding to do, or puddles to splash in, or games to play! A story about all the things a mischievous dog might do to stay up just a little bit longer.

Why we chose it

A popular favourite at our ABC story sessions for the under 5s. Fred is delightfully scruffy and naughty and the illustrations are full of vibrant colour.

Where it came from

Yasmeen Ismail is from Dublin and now lives in Bristol. She ran an animation production company before deciding to turn her attention to writing and illustrating picture books. She loves Snoopy and Quentin Blake, and says that her aim is always to create something that her four-year-old self would have wanted to dive into.

Where it went next

In 2014 Time for Bed, Fred! was longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal, shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, and won New York Times Best Illustrated Book and the V&A Award for Book Illustration.

Associated stories

Yasmeen Ismail has written and illustrated many other books, including I’m a Girl, Specs for Rex, and Would You Like A Banana? She has collaborated with other authors and illustrators, notably in How Will Santa Find Us? Made in aid of homelessness charity Focus Ireland, it is a story about a family who lose their home just before Christmas. She has also produced the Draw and Discover series – a trio of activity books.
