A delightful animated film about an inventor and his dog who travel to the moon

Story

A Grand Day Out is a short stop-motion animation featuring eccentric inventor Wallace and his loyal dog Gromit. When Wallace runs out of his favourite cheese they build a rocket and fly to the moon (which is of course made of cheese) to get more. They encounter a lonely cooker-shaped robot who dreams of visiting earth and is determined to travel home with them.

Why we chose it

A Grand Day Out is stylish and funny and very British. It introduced Wallace and Gromit, two animated plasticine figures who went on to become global icons.

Viewers of all ages still enjoy Nick Park’s endearing characters, quirky stories, and witty visual references. Painstakingly made over seven years, the 24 minutes are packed with delightful details from mice in sunglasses to a rocket with a handbrake.

Where it came from

Growing up in Preston, Lancashire, Nick Park loved drawing and was a big fan of the Beano, Tintin, The Clangers and Thunderbirds. At film school he developed the Wallace and Gromit characters, originally imagining Gromit as a talking cat. Gromit became a silent but highly intelligent dog, with extremely expressive eyebrows. Wallace was inspired by Park’s father and named after a dog Nick Park met on a bus.

Where it went next

The 24-minute ‘claymation’ was beaten to an Oscar by Creature Comforts, another Aardman animation, but started a successful series that includes four short films, a feature film, 16 television programmes, video games, comics, a stage show and a fairground ride. In 2005 NASA named one of its Mars explorer robots after Gromit.

In 2019 Nick Park announced he was developing a new Wallace and Gromit animation.

Associated stories

Other Wallace and Gromit stories include, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave, A Matter of Loaf and Death and The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
