Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers

1001 Wallace And Gromit The Wrong Trousers
Added on 16th August 2020

Creator Nick Park
First released 1993, Aardman Animations, UK

A joyously funny, action-packed stop motion animation for children and adults.

Gromit the dog reluctantly moves into the kennel when Wallace, his eccentric owner, rents his bedroom to a sinister penguin. When Wallace builds a giant pair of remote-controlled Techno-trousers to take Gromit for walks, the penguin uses them – and Wallace – to steal a world-famous diamond. Now Gromit must rescue his friend from a criminal mastermind.

Why we chose it

The second of Nick Park’s much-loved Wallace and Gromit ‘claymations’, The Wrong Trousers is a tightly-plotted, joyously funny, action-packed adventure. The Oscar winning 30-minute animation combines ridiculous inventions, stylish Film Noir references, classic comedy moments (who could forget Gromit’s face as the penguin removes his rubber glove disguise?) and a spectacular high speed chase on a toy train.

Where it came from

The Wallace and Gromit stop-motion animations began with A Grand Day Out in 1989, Nick Park’s student project that took a further 7 years to complete. Gromit is made of stone-coloured plasticine and was originally imagined as a talking cat. He quickly became a silent, but highly intelligent dog, with extremely expressive eyebrows. Wallace is loosely based on Nick Park’s father.

Park has said that Wallace’s inventions are all designed around the principle of using a "sledgehammer to crack a nut”.

Where it went next

Wallace and Gromit went on to win many more awards and feature in two more short films, a full-length film, 16 television programmes, as well as video games, comics, a stage show and a fairground ride. In 2019 Nick Park announced he was developing a new Wallace and Gromit animation.

Associated stories

Other Wallace and Gromit adventures are A Grand Day Out, A Close Shave, A Matter of Loaf and Death and The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,
