A hugely popular picture book with fantastical illustrations. Winnie the Witch is a firm favourite with children all over the world.

Story

Winnie the Witch is in a whole heap of bother – her house is black, inside and out, but so is her cat, Wilbur. Poor Wilbur is sat upon and tripped over until Winnie has had enough! Can her magic put an end to this spell of trouble?

Why we chose it

Winnie the Witch has been a firm favourite since her first appearance and the stories have travelled all over the world. The illustrations, by Oxford illustrator Korky Paul, transport the reader into a madcap, fantasy world. Children love Winnie.

Where it came from

Valerie Thomas’s experience as a teacher lead her to write a short story for the OUP’s Reading Tree Programme, illustrated by Korky Paul. It was an instant hit with the editor who turned it into a full-length picture book. This began the Winnie and Wilbur series.

Where it went next

Winnie the Witch won the Children’s Book Award in 1987 and the series has been printed in over ten languages, selling millions of copies worldwide. There has been an animated TV series on Milkshake! and two stage adaptations at the Birmingham Rep in 2001 and 2017.

Associated Stories

There are a growing number of titles in the Winnie and Wilbur series. Favourites include, Winnie and Wilbur in Space, Happy Birthday Winnie, The Midnight Dragon, The New Computer and The Big, Bad Robot. In addition there is a Young Fiction series by Laura Owen and Korky Paul and a series of Wilbur board books for very young fans of Winnie.
