Join us for Alice's Day when our Lower Garden will be transformed into a magical Wonderland.
The Mad Hatter’s hat is polished, the March Hare’s ears are twitching, and something wonderfully whimsical is brewing in the Gardens once more…
This Alice’s Day, WhatNot Theatre invites you to a brand-new twist on a Wonderland adventure. Join our delightfully unpredictable duo as they whirl back into the Oxford Botanic Garden with another topsy-turvy tea party packed with playful antics, costume chaos, and peculiar storytelling.
Tumble down the Rabbit hole into a world where time runs sideways, riddles make sense (sort of), and teacups are never quite empty. Along the way, encounter familiar faces: a grinning Cheshire Cat, a flustered White Rabbit, a contemplative Caterpillar, and a random Lobster.
With unexpected twists, spontaneous seat-swapping, and interactive hilarity, this open-air performance promises frolicsome fun for curious minds of all ages. Bring your picnic blanket, an umbrella, and a jam sandwich or two; Hatter is quite partial!
Tea Time with Hatter & Hare is a relaxed, inclusive family performance where the audience becomes part of the tale. Just beware... the Queen of Hearts. Your ticket for the event includes entry to the Garden all day so you can arrive before the performance for which you are booked and stay as long as you like afterwards. We are open as normal from 10:00 until close.
In addition to our theatre performances, enjoy the following activities, free with your entry ticket:

Where: Christ Church Meadow
When:
11:00 - Book in advance
14:00 - Book in advance
Tickets: £10 per person.
An Alice’s Day extra: a leisurely walk around beautiful Christ Church Meadow with expert local historian Mark Davies (a trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society and author of 'Alice in Waterland'). The circular route will follow waterside paths familiar to the real Alice (daughter of the Dean of Christ Church) and Lewis Carroll, who taught and lived all his adult life at the college. Based partly on his own research, Mark will highlight in particular the all-important role of the River Thames in the creation of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking-Glass'.
With reference to the wider historical and geographical context, as well as other classics of fantasy fiction, the tour will also reveal real Oxford people as the inspiration for some of the characters, and places and events which shaped some episodes in both books. The walk does NOT include entrance to the college of Christ Church itself.
Please note that as this walk is designed primarily for adults and older children there is no charge for primary-age children. Wheelchair users are welcome with prior notice. This is a ticketed event: cost per person is £10.

Summary At A Glance programme
One golden afternoon on 4 July 1862, Charles Dodgson, an Oxford don, took the 10-year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters on a boating picnic up the River Thames from Folly Bridge in Oxford. To amuse the children he told them a story about a little girl, sitting bored by a riverbank, who finds herself tumbling down a rabbit hole into a topsy-turvy world called Wonderland.
The story so delighted Alice that she begged him to write it down – the result was the 1864 handwritten manuscript Alice’s Adventures Under Ground. This original manuscript, which was prepared as a gift for Alice Liddell, is now in the British Library and is available to view on their website. The following year the manuscript was published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland under the pen name Lewis Carroll, with illustrations by Sir John Tenniel. A sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, was published in 1871.
Alice’s Day commemorates an important moment for children’s literature and for Oxford. Alice became one of the most popular, most widely quoted and most widely translated children’s book ever written, with editions even in Esperanto and shorthand. It marked the birth of modern children’s literature. After Alice, children’s books became less stuffy and more entertaining. Oxford became a world centre of children’s stories and inspirational home to many authors and illustrators including Kenneth Grahame, CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien and Philip Pullman.
