Press release – Hot off the press: a new season of print workshops at The Story Museum 5 Jan 2013

Saturday 5th January

Put down your iPad, step away from your laptop, and come to The Story Museum to find out where printing all began, at a brand new season of workshops starting in January.

The sunny Bodleian Hand-Printing Workshop at The Story Museum is home to several beautiful antique printing presses – some of them dating from the 1600s. Visitors can turn their hand to typesetting and printing, using techniques and equipment passed from generation to generation.

Whether you’re aged 8 or 80, there’s a workshop for you.  Families can learn a new skill together, and discover how early stories were printed. Adults can attend one-off sessions, or go to the double workshop Print your own Valentine, (Tuesday 29 January) where they’ll design and make a Valentine’s Day card for someone special.

Those who really want to get involved can sign up for a popular six-week course, and print their own book of poems and gain an in-depth understanding of techniques that have not changed since the 18th Century.

The courses are run by Dr Paul Nash, a specialist from the Bodleian Library and a fount (or should it be “font”?) of fascinating information on historic printing techniques. Tickets are now on sale and those interested should book early as courses fill up fast.
