The story of the boyhood of Father Christmas.

Story

A boy called Nikolas sets off on a magical adventure, full of exciting characters, magical moments - and snow.

Why we chose it

A magical story for Christmas.

Where it came from

English novelist and journalist, Matt Haig (born 1975, Sheffield, Yorkshire), enjoys writing the type of books that he would have liked to have had on his shelf as a boy. The idea for A Boy Called Christmas evolved after his son asked what Father Christmas was like as a boy.

Where it went next

On its release, it received many positive reviews and as a result was shortlisted for the British Book Industry Awards. A family film adaptation of the book is currently in production and is due to be released worldwide, by Studio Canal, Blueprint Pictures and Netflix, around December 2020.

Associated stories

A Boy Called Christmas was the first in a series of three books which form part of his Christmas Collection; it was followed by the equally successful The Girl Who Saved Christmas (2016) and Father Christmas and Me (2017). Matt Haig has also found success with many other books including Shadow Forest (2007), which won numerous awards.
