Story

Sante was found after a shipwreck when she was a baby, and was raised by a band of nomads who travel between cities performing circus tricks. At one stop, Sante’s past catches up with her, and she starts to unravel the mystery of her birth.

Why we chose it

A vivid and compelling coming of age fantasy adventure for teens.

Where it came from

A Jigsaw of Fire and Stars is the third novel by Ghanian-British author Yaba Badoe. Badoe also writes short stories, which, like her novels, blend African legend with modern issues like environmentalism and human trafficking.

Badoe is an award-winning filmmaker, and in 2014 was nominated for the Distinguished Woman of African Cinema Award.

Where it went next

A Jigsaw of Fire and Stars was highly praised as a unique and imaginative magical realist novel. In 2018, it was shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award and nominated for the CILIP Carnegie Award.

Associated stories

While A Jigsaw of Fire and Stars is a stand-alone novel, Badoe has written other stories for YA readers. Her novel Wolf Light is another fantasy/magical realist story, while her book True Murder is a mystery story set in a boarding school. She is also the author of The Secret of the Purple Lake, a collection of short stories for younger readers.
