A story that shows the value of generosity, kindness and of helping those around us.

Story

‘Auntie Cockroach’, also known as Khale Suske is tired of living alone so sets out to find a husband. She turns down several proposals from unkind men until she meets sweet Mr Mouse. She agrees to marry him and they live happily together. However, one day, Auntie Cockroach falls into the river and cannot get out…

Why we chose it

An old Persian folk story about helping others.

Where it came from

The story is an old Persian folk story, passed down from generation to generation. It is now commonly known in Iran, and teaches the lesson of generosity and helping others.

Where it went next

The story is included in Pea Boy and Other Stores from Iran (2010), written by Elizabeth Laird and illustrated by Shirin Adl.

It has also been loosely adapted as a live-action film called Auntie Cockroach (2009), directed by Nadereh Torkamani. The film’s story is slightly different as ‘Auntie Cockroach’ leaves poor Mr Mouse and becomes engaged with an industrialist. The story has also been used as a talking point for women’s rights, particularly regarding marriage.

Associated stories

Pea Boy and Other Stores from Iran (2010), written by Elizabeth Laird and illustrated by Shirin Adl retells seven Iranian folktales including Sparrow’s Quest, Pea Boy and Kayvan the Brave.
