Where it came from
The story is an old Persian folk story, passed down from generation to generation. It is now commonly known in Iran, and teaches the lesson of generosity and helping others.
Where it went next
The story is included in Pea Boy and Other Stores from Iran (2010), written by Elizabeth Laird and illustrated by Shirin Adl.
It has also been loosely adapted as a live-action film called Auntie Cockroach (2009), directed by Nadereh Torkamani. The film’s story is slightly different as ‘Auntie Cockroach’ leaves poor Mr Mouse and becomes engaged with an industrialist.
