A brilliantly funny, exciting rollercoaster of a time travel film

Story

Marty McFly and Dr Emmett L. Brown use a car-shaped time machine to travel back in time. However, Marty’s existence in the future is thrown into jeopardy when his mother falls in love with the wrong person. Will the Doc and Marty mend the consequences of their misadventures and keep Marty’s future intact?

Why we chose it

A great time travel adventure which the whole family can enjoy.

Where it came from

Zemeckis and Gale wrote the script for Back to the Future after Gale wondered whether he would have befriended his father if they had been at school together. The script was rejected four times before Spielberg agreed to produce the project at Amblin Entertainment with Universal studios as distributor. Changes to the script meant that the DeLorean car replaced a fridge as the time machine.

Where it went next

Back to the Future was the highest grossing film in 1985. Since then, a franchise has developed. The 21st of October has been branded as Back to the Future Day. In 2015, the year mentioned in the film as the future, the film was re-released and made huge profits. The film has received numerous awards. Spinoffs include an animated television series, a motion-simulated ride, and video games.

Associated stories

In 1989 and 1990, respectively, Back to the Future II and Back to the Future III were released and continued the narrative of the initial film.

A Back to the Future musical created by, Zemeckis and Gale, the film’s original creative team, premiered at Manchester Royal Opera House in February 2020.
