The hilarious adventures of Dave Pigeon, a pigeon on a mission to defeat Mean Cat and make the world a safer place for pigeons everywhere.

Story

Dave Pigeon is on a mission – to find and eat all of your biscuits. On his way, he is going to attempt to defeat his archenemy, Mean Cat. He will then write his advice down, with the help of his trusty sidekick, Skipper, so that you too can benefit from his pigeony advice.

Why we chose it

A very funny story about friendship and teamwork told from the point of view of Dave, a pigeon who is not quite as clever as he thinks he is.

Where it came from

Swapna Haddow wrote her first book aged eight but she swapped it for two stickers and a couple of marbles. Having tried medical school and writing for The Royal Drawing School, she was gently pushed by colleagues and her husband into writing for children. Dave Pigeon is the result.

Where it went next

The first Dave Pigeon book was the winner of the North Somerset Teachers’ Book Award, Read Aloud Category 2016, the winner of Surrey Libraries’ Children’s Book Award 2017, and a winner of the Fantastic Book Awards 2018. Swapna then moved to New Zealand where she continues to write, loves to read and eats Jaffa Cakes.

Associated stories

There are three other books in the Dave Pigeon series: Nuggets! (2017), Racer! (2018), Royal Coo! (2019)

Swapna also writes the Ballet Bunny series and the picture book My Dad is a Grizzly Bear.
