Kevin finds himself home alone at Christmas and has to tackle two determined burglars.

Story

Kevin McCallister and his family are preparing to go to Paris for Christmas. During a storm, the house loses electricity and the family miss their alarms in the morning, resulting in a stressful trip to the airport and a sleeping Kevin is left behind! Kevin’s excitement at being left ‘home alone’ is quickly flattened when he realises there are two burglars prowling the neighbourhood…

Why we chose it

One of the most popular films with Story Museum visitors.

Where it came from

Director Chris Columbus had previously worked with Macaulay Culkin (the actor who plays Kevin) on a film called Uncle Buck. Culkin’s cheeky, clever and interrogative character inspired the character for Home Alone.

Where it went next

The movie had a great success. It stayed in the top spot for 12 weeks after its release! Not only was it the highest grossing film in 1990, but it held this Guinness World Record for 27 years! The movie was turned into a novel and inspired three video games and two board games.

Associated stories

Home Alone had four sequels (two of which were made for theatre). In 1992 they released the film sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York which had most of the original cast playing their roles.
