A story about family across the generations, family secrets and mysteries and the role of an ancient wood.

Story

While her brother is in hospital, Alice is whisked away to live with her grandmother, Nell. The only thing that brings Alice peace of mind at her grandmother’s house is the Darkling Wood at the end of her garden. Nell would prefer the wood to be cut down, but when exploring it Alice meets a mysterious girl named Flo who reveals secrets of the wood to Emma which makes her wonder if she will be able to save it in time from destruction.

Emma Carroll is one of the most popular authors writing historical fiction for children today.

Where it came from

After completing an MA course in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University in 2013 Carroll’s dream of officially writing YA books came true and she has been doing it ever since.

Where it went next

In Darkling Wood went on to be shortlisted for the Oxfordshire Book Awards in 2016.
