Story

Minecraft doesn’t have a single story or goal – it’s all up to you! Play in a range of modes. You can play alone, and fight ‘mobs’, or you can play with others – whether you help them or not is up to you! You can also play in ‘survival’ mode, and try to gather food, water and other supplies.

Why we chose it

A unique game, Minecraft is set apart by its block like, 3D visuals and the freedom for the player to decide their own story. It is incredibly successful and critically acclaimed.

Where it came from

Minecraft was developed by Markus Persson. He left his job to work on it full time, and set up its production company, Mojang Studios, with the profits.

Where it went next

It has been described as the most influential game of all time. Amongst other things, it has been nominated for five BAFTAs and was given a place in the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2020. In 2010, an annual convention, MineCon was started. You can now also buy Minecraft merchandise, including Lego sets and books.

Associated stories

Mojang Studios have also released the spin-off games Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Earth. In 2012, a documentary about Minecraft called Minecraft: The Story of Mojang was released. An animated film based on the game, Minecraft: The Movie is due for release in March 2022.
