A beautifully animated film with a powerful heroine.

Story

Follow the sun and the stars and navigate the open ocean, along with a teenage girl looking to prove herself an expert wave finder, capable of fulfilling the quest of her ancestors – to restore a mysterious relic. No one should mess with her thick, wavy, and notoriously hard to groom kind of hair, on which her ambition flows, as she and her demigod and wave finder master Maui, fight the enormous monsters and other dangerous obstacles of the ocean. Watch this movie and find your inner warrior!

Why we chose it

A brilliant movie, with breath-taking animation and soundtrack, which not only nuanced contemporary storytelling with diversity and culture inclusion issues (Polynesian mythology and folklore), but also highlighted the 12th Disney princess as a powerful and relatable heroine.

Where it came from

Following the archaeological thread of the world’s history, the two filmmakers focused on events happening 3000 years ago in the Pacific Islands and created a character out of the core element giving life to the Polynesian culture, Moana – the ocean.

Where it went next

Nominated for two Academy Awards, praised for its amazing soundtrack, but, most importantly, because of winning the hearts of all Disney fans around the globe, Moana is a blockbuster Disney movie, set to have an upcoming sequel sometime in the future, though more information is yet to be disclosed by Disney.

Associated stories

The two directors (Ron Clements and John Musker) collaborated on other animated films, such as: The Little Mermaid (1989), Aladdin (1992), Hercules (1997), Treasure Planet (2002) and The Princess and the Frog (2009).
