Story

Guybrush Threepwood wants to become the best pirate in the Caribbean! Follow him on his adventure, sailing around Melee Island. Explore, solving puzzles, completing recipes and following maps with the help of Guybrush’s true love, Elaine Marley.

Why we chose it

The Monkey Island games are adventure games packed full of references to classic films, from James Bond to Star Wars. Spot them as you win sword fights!

Where it came from

It was originally written by Ron Gilbert, Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer, who were inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World. Ron wanted to create a game where you could hop off the boat and explore wherever you wanted! It was produced by LucasArts.

Where it went next

The original game, The Secret of Monkey Island, led to four sequels, including The Curse of Monkey Island and Escape from Monkey Island. The game has a large following for its nostalgic feel, and is viewed as one of the best click-and-point games. The Monkey Island games are now owned by Disney, although Ron Gilbert has started a petition to buy them back!

Associated stories

An animated film based on the game was planned, called Curse of Monkey Island. It was never released.
