A hugely successful role-playing video game series.

Story

Immerse yourself into the game and set out on a journey to collect and train creatures known as pocket monsters. As the game begins, you are allowed to choose a starter Pokémon. With your new battle pet, you can explore various environments, while battling, capturing, levelling up and evolving a wide variety of Pokémons, on your way to become the very best. Get your friends into battle and trade them and catch them all.

Why we chose it

A video game series which became not only a huge media franchise, but a worldwide phenomenon. The mentality of collecting and trading pocket monsters is what makes this game an endless source of entertainment.

Where it came from

Under Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori, the two game designers, Game Freak evolved into a well-known game developing company, and from which emerged the whole Pokémon media franchise.

Where it went next

After the first four official games, Game Freak decided to develop more and more games, with new features like Pokémon breeding, mega evolution, and probably the most revolutionary one, fully polygonal 3D graphics. In addition, dozens of spin-offs have been also made available as alternatives with a twist for the original gameplay, which are very popular as well, a good example being Pokémon Go, an augmented reality mobile game. Pokémon also made it on the big screens with the 3D movie Detective Pikachu.

Associated stories

Pokémon Adventures (manga series) and Pokémon (animated series).
