A young adult novel telling the stories of two siblings separated in childhood meeting again as teenagers.

Story

Cass Montgomery has a loving family, a great education and the attention of all the boys at school. Aidan Jones is barely surviving his way through the many foster homes and bedsits that sum up his youth. When Aidan contacts Cass on social media, she knows who he is. But is this familiar face from the past a blessing in disguise or a memory she’d rather forget?

Why we chose it

A fast paced, gripping story with a dual narrative which moves smoothly between the two main characters with their very different perspectives, personalities and backgrounds.

Where it came from

Following a career in journalism, Keren David’s novels are often inspired by news stories. One about birth families contacting adopted children through social media sparked her imagination and led to the story of Cass and Aidan. A friend who works as a social worker was able to fill her on details of the topic which helped create a stronger sense of the characters.

Where it went next

Salvage was shortlisted for the Bookseller YA Book Prize 2015, The Romantic Novel of the Year award, and was one of the Telegraph’s 40 best YA books of 2014. It was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and the French translation, Te Retrouver was nominated for Les Incorruptibles prize.

Other books by the author include the When I was Joe Trilogy (2010-2012), Lia's Guide to Winning the Lottery (2012) which has also been adapted into a musical version for the stage, This is Not a Love Story (2015), Cuckoo (2016), The Liar’s Handbook (2017), Stranger (2018), True Sisters (2018) and The Disconnect (2019).
