Enter the dragon kingdom and play as Spyro - the much loved little purple dragon who must work to defeat evil and rescue his friends.
Story
Enter an entirely different reality; the Dragon Kingdom. Players take the role of a young, purple dragon named Spyro whose friends have all been imprisoned inside crystals by the evil Gnasty Gnorc. It’s up to Spyro and his best friend Sparx the dragonfly to rescue them.
Why we chose it
After Spyro was released in 1998 it quickly grew in popularity. Spyro is a timeless character well-loved by the gaming community. In 2011, Spyro debuted as the main character of the first Skylanders video game.
Where it came from
Spyro was developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment in 1998. When Spyro was first being created inspiration was taken from the 1996 film Dragonheart and was originally aimed at a more adult demographic with more sombre themes. However, the decision to make the game more PG ultimately paid off as the game is now a family favourite.
Where it went next
After the first game was released in 1998, Spyro became a trilogy with Insomniac and Sony continuing to work together to create Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage! (1999) and Spyro: Year Of The Dragon (2000). Most recently, in 2018 the original trilogy was remastered for Playstation 4, proving the undying love that gaming fans have for that little, purple dragon.
