A laugh out loud funny story, filled with hilariously ingenious ways to train an untrainable dog.
Story
Walking a dog every day in the school holidays might sound like a good idea – especially if you’re paid £30 to do it – but Trevor is not so sure. He knows what Streaker is like, and how fast she can run! This story is really funny and Trevor and Streaker get into all sorts of trouble and have some ridiculous adventures together. The illustrations by Nick Sharratt are great too.
Why we chose it
A laugh out loud funny story, which children love.
Where it came from
Jeremy Strong (born in 1949) was a primary school teacher in Kent before he became a full-time writer. (He also worked in a bakery putting jam into doughnuts and picked strawberries).
When he was a child, he had lots of accidents - for example falling out of a window and landing on his head and also when he was riding his bike at 1,000 miles an hour (or so he says). He loved playing in the fields around his house and having adventures, as well as accidents. Maybe this is why he wrote about a boy and a dog having fun and getting up to mischief?
Where it went next
The Hundred-Mile-an-Hour-Dog won the Children’s Book Award in 1997.
Associated stories
This first story about Streaker was such a success that Jeremy wrote six more stories about her – so if you like the first one, you can keep on reading! The titles are: Return of the Hundred-Mile-An-Hour-Dog; Wanted! The Hundred-Mile-An-Hour-Dog; Christmas Chaos for the Hundred-Mile-An-Hour-Dog; The Hundred-Mile-An-Hour-Dog Goes for Gold!; Kidnapped! The Hundred-Mile-An-Hour-Dog’s Sizzling Summer; The Hundred-Mile-An-Hour-Dog, Master of Disguise.
Jeremy Strong has written over 100 books for children, including: My Brother’s Famous Bottom series, Romans on the Rampage and There’s a Viking in my Bed and Other Stories.
