Story

Matteo is on the run from Sandino. He saved by a group of artists and artisans – one of whom is the famous Leonardo Da Vinci. But Sandino isn't finished with him. As Italy is ravaged by war and sickness, Matteo must remain hidden from powerful forces to protect a valuable item, the very item that set Sandino on his trail – the Medici Seal.

Why we chose it

A meticulously researched historical young adult novel set in the corrupt and often violent world of the Medici’s and Borgia’s in Renaissance Italy, and which draws on the life of Leonardo Da Vinci.

Where it came from

Theresa Breslin is a Carnegie Medal winning author who has published over 50 books for a wide range of ages and reading abilities. She researched the novel by travelling in Italy where she not only admired the work of Da Vinci, but also paid a visit to Senigallia – a town which featured in one the books most dramatic moment.

Where it went next

The book was shortlisted for the 2007 Booktrust Teenage Prize and longlisted for the Carnegie medal in the same year.
