Meet Sally Jones, ship's engineer turned detective - and an anthropoid ape.

Story

Sally Jones is no ordinary ape - she’s also an engineer aboard the SS Hudson Queen. But when her friend Captain Koskala is arrested for murder, Sally Jones must do everything she can to prove his innocence - an adventure which takes her from Lisbon to Bombay in a quest to uncover the truth.

Why we chose it

Sally Jones is an original and lovable main character. The story is a fast paced adventure like no other that takes the reader all over the world as Sally tries to uncover the truth.

Where it came from

Jakob Wegelius (1966-) is a Swedish writer and illustrator - he also created all of the character illustrations and maps for the novel. The book was inspired by the author’s own travels and sailing adventures - the section of the book set in India was written in Kerala.

Where it went next

The book was awarded the August Prize for Best Children's Book and the Nordic Council Children and Young People's Literature Prize.

Associated stories

Read about Sally Jones’ life before she meets Captain Koskela in graphic novel The Legend of Sally Jones (2018). A sequel The False Rose was published in Swedish in 2020 - the English translation is eagerly awaited.
