The insects wage war against each other - and it's not good for the garden.

Story

War is declared in the garden when over spraying by the Big Ones leads to Slug, Greenfly and Maggot calling for rebellion. Opposed by the Butterfly, Ladybird and Bumble Bee the garden goes to ruin as the war rages and the Big Ones decide to build over it. The insects come together again to bring the garden back to its former glory and thus save their home.

Why we chose it

David Wood’s first original play is fondly remembered by many people who first saw it performed in the 70s and 80s.

David Wood has been called the National Playwright for Children for his ability to write for children without patronising or talking down to them. He tells stories that captivate both children and their parents. He firmly believes that children need quality in writing and in production values to give them memorable experiences and engage their imaginations and for over 50 years he has been putting those beliefs into practice and creating exciting and engaging theatre for young audiences.

Where it came from

The Plotters of Cabbage Patch Corner was David Wood’s first original play. The environmental concerns reflected the concerns of the children at the time but are as real to children today as they were then.

Where it went next

It ran at the Shaw Theatre London for Christmas 1971 and 1972. It has since played at theatres across Britain and abroad and has been performed by school and amateur companies.

Associated stories

David Wood has written many plays for children of all ages, including The Gingerbread Man, The Selfish Shellfish and Hijack over Hygenia. His adaptations of popular stories include such well known classics as Spots Birthday Party, The Tiger Who Came To Tea, Babe the Sheep Pig, The Witches, The BFG, Tom’s Midnight Garden and Goodnight Mr Tom.
