The story of how Rama and Sita overcame the evil Ravana.

Story

Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana are exiled to the Dandaka forest. They spend ten years wandering the forest and facing challenges! One day, the evil demon Ravana comes to kidnap Sita – will Rama and Lakshmana be able to save her?

Why we chose it

The Ramayana is one of the great Indian epics and the story of Rama and Sita one of the best known and best loved stories in the Ramayana.

Where it came from

The story is contained in the long Indian Epic titled the Ramayana. This Sanskrit poem contains 24,000 verses and relays the life of Lord Ram. The exact date of the Epic is unconfirmed, though it tends to be dated between the 4th and 7th century BCE.

Where it went next

The story includes Rama’s return to his village (Ayodhya). This return is commemorated through the Hindu festival ‘Diwali’ also referred to as the Festival of Lights. Indian families come together to eat food, gift sweets and set off fireworks. Ramand Saagar produced the famous TV series Ramayan screened on channel Doordarshan based off the Indian epic which retells the story of Lord Ram (1987-88). Certain episodes were watched by over 80 million people.

Associated stories

The life story of Ram is seen in many other literary sources. Traces can be found in Chapter 4 of Vishnu Purana, Chapter 112 of Padama Purana, Chapter 143 of Gurada Purana and Chapters 5-11 in Agni Purana. Some also say the other Indian epic, Mahabharata, summarises the life of Ram in the Vana Parva.
