Step off the sidewalk and see what you find there, in the poem that gave its name to a popular anthology.

Story

Come to the place where the sidewalk ends and a wonderful world begins.

Where it came from

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a collection of poems and drawings which presents a topsy turvy world of nonsense, imagination and wonder.

Tomi Ungerer encouraged Shel Silverstein to write and draw for children - he previously only wrote for adults.

Where it went next

In 2004 a special 30th Anniversary Edition was published which included 12 new poems.

An audio version of the collection was published in 1983 which won a Grammy in 1984 for Best Recording for Children. In 2000 a 25th Anniversary Album was released with more added content.

Associated stories

The Giving Tree – one of Shel Silverstein’s most popular children’s books. Uncle Shelby's Story of Lafcadio: The Lion Who Shot Back – his first children’s book.
