Wing Jones has never really know where she belongs until she discovers a talent she never knew she had.

Story

Wing feels like she doesn’t fit in, and wishes she wasn’t overshadowed by her older brother Marcus - the popular football star who’s never picked on for his Chinese-Black heritage. But when Marcus does something unforgivable, Wing’s life is turned upside down. Could running turn everything around?

Why we chose it

A young adult novel about family, finding who you are and being true to yourself.

Where it came from

Katherine Webber is originally from California but currently lives in London. She has also lived and worked in Hong Kong, Maui, and Atlanta, and loves to travel. The story was inspired by her own relationship with her older brother, as well as her experiences as a teenage runner.

Where it went next

Wing Jones was selected as one of the Bank Street College Best Children’s Books of the Year, as well as being featured on other books of the month lists. The book has been praised for its diversity, and called a ‘sweeping family story’.

Associated stories

Katherine Webber’s second YA book, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, was released in 2018 and shortlisted for the YA Book Prize in 2019. She also writes a series for younger readers, Sam Wu, under the name Katie Tsang with her husband Kevin.
