Pop Up
Listen To This Story

A time-travelling pop-up that explores how Black lives have been pictured, imagined and celebrated in children’s books.

A time-travelling pop-up that explores how Black lives have been pictured, imagined and celebrated in children’s books - from the days of abolition to the stories on today’s shelves. Discover hidden histories, meet the storytellers who shaped generations, and encounter today’s story heroes.

About the Curator

The pop-up exhibition is curated with Professor Karen Sands-O’Connor, an internationally recognised expert on Black British children’s literature from the University of Sheffield.

About the exhibition

Listen to this Story! will take visitors on a thought-provoking journey through 200 years of Black representation in British children’s literature, exploring the stories, characters and voices that have shaped generations of young readers. By tracing the long and varied history of Black presence in children’s books, it highlights the importance of seeing yourself reflected in stories.

This pop-up exhibition is aimed at families with children age 5+.

Please note: the exhibition will be closed on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 7 – Friday 10 July
  • Tuesday 14 – Thursday 16 July

Discounted admission will apply during these closures.
