Who said that vegetables weren't scary?! Join us for the first week of our popular Story Explorer skills courses for ages 8-12. Book one day or come for all five.
Our Story Explorer courses offer young people aged 8-12 the opportunity to explore their creativity, with guest appearances from professional story-makers including authors, artists, musicians and drama practitioners. Sessions are led by our expert Story Leaders and involve plenty of games and fun along the way. It's a great way to make new friends, try new activities and immerse yourself in the world of stories.
This week's course will explore stories with unexpected plant life including Alice through the Looking Glass, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White and Christina Rosetti’s Goblin Market.
MONDAY 31 JULY: FAIRYTALE FRUIT
Join in with storytelling from the Story Leaders of fruity fairytales, from the poisoned apple in Snow White to the Russian folktale ‘The Silver Saucer and the Transparent Apple.’ Then meet Olfactory Artist Anna Gilchrist for a very special scent workshop, using a mixture of ingredients to create your own mini-perfumes. Will you make the ‘smell of happiness’? Or maybe ‘the stench of fear’?
TUESDAY 1 AUGUST: GOBLINS GALORE
Today you’ll explore Goblin Market, Christina Rossetti’s weird and wonderful story of goblins who bear delicious fruit – but might curse you too! You will spend the afternoon with awesome artist Holly T Burrows and make your own goblin mask to take home. There will be plenty of role play, games, riddles and chat along with way.
WEDNESDAY 2 AUGUST: BEWARE THE PLANTS THAT STING
Today we’ll discover the classic story of The Day of the Triffids, the story of plants that start to walk and sting! Then work with percussionist, Adriano Adewale to create a soundscape using percussion instruments, full of suspense. There will be plenty of role play, games, riddles and chat along with way.
THURSDAY 3 AUGUST: DELICIOUS GREEK MYTHS
Fruit has played a role in classic Greek myths, from the pomegranate that doomed Persephone to live in the underworld, to the Apple of Discord that started the entire Trojan war! You’ll munch on these stories through role play, games and craft. You’ll get to eat pomegranates and apples too – but these ones aren’t poisonous, we’ve checked.
FRIDAY 4 AUGUST: FABULOUS FABLES OF FRUIT AND TREES
Today we will explore gorgeous stories of life-giving fruit, and as a change from the rest of the week, no evil in sight! We will explore the stories of ‘How Strawberries came into the World,’ from the Cherokee tradition, the story of ‘The Tree of Life’ from the Amazon, and ‘The Monkey and the Mango’ from India. You’ll also be treated to a pre-view of one of our beautiful Story Suitcases and discover what’s hidden inside.
Days run from 10:00 - 16:00. Or just add on 'wrap around care' at the checkout and extend the day from 09:00 - 17:00 for an additional £16 . All sessions are led by our skilled Story Leaders. Suitable for ages 8-12.
