The expected runtime of this event is 360

Find out about puppetry from shadow puppets to marionettes. Join us for a week of puppet-themed storytelling on our popular Story Explorer skills courses for ages 8-12. Book one day or come for all five.

Our Story Explorer courses offer young people aged 8-12 the opportunity to explore their creativity, with guest appearances from professional story-makers including authors, artists, musicians and drama practitioners. Sessions are led by our expert Story Leaders and involve plenty of games and fun along the way. It's a great way to make new friends, try new activities and immerse yourself in the world of stories.

This week's stories explore different types of puppets and the stories in which they feature.

MONDAY 7 AUGUST: Walking Dolls and Toys that Move
Join our Story Leaders for a day of exploring some famous stories about toys that come to life, including The Nutcracker and the Mouse King from Germany, Pinocchio from Italy and The Greedy Wooden Baby from Czechia. There will be role play, riddles, games and dressing up along the way!

TUESDAY 8 AUGUST: Shadow Puppets
Today you will work expert puppeteers from the Puppet Barge and learn how to make your own shadow puppet insect and get a chance to try out your puppet on our shadow theatre screen. What weird and wonderful insect will you choose?

WEDNESAY 9 AUGUST: Hand and Finger Puppets
Today you will meet puppeteer Sue Eves, puppeteer and voice of Tamba from Tikkabilla! Sue will show you top tips to bring your puppet to life like a professional. You might even meet Tamba the Dragon himself! In the afternoon, we’ll find out about the Punch and Judy tradition and make an updated version for 2023, using our very own Punch and Judy seaside theatre set.

THURSDAY 10 AUGUST: Rod Puppets

In the morning you’ll make your own rod puppets from sticks, spoons and wooden pegs. Once all the new characters have been created, we’ll create a mini play to see what chaotic scenarios could ensue!

FRIDAY 11 AUGUST: String Puppets
Today you’ll get to meet a collection of vintage Pelham Puppets and have a go at operating them. In the afternoon you’ll make your very own string puppet from recycled materials!

Days run from 10:00 - 16:00. Or just add on 'wrap around care' at the checkout and extend the day from 09:00 - 17:00 for an additional £16.
